‘Veggie Breakfast’ – falafel, beans, roast tomatoes, avocado and mushroom

Where: The Skinny Kitchen, 93 Boucher Road, Belfast, BT12 6HR

When: 14th January 2018

We stumbled across The Skinny Kitchen completely by accident just before I was to get on the ferry back to Scotland. Situated on the outskirts of Belfast city centre near a retail park, The Skinny Kitchen caught our eye with big banners proclaiming it had vegan options. It’s a large and spacious place with lovely attention to detail, plants around the place and fresh rosemary in bottles on the tables. The Skinny Kitchen started in Ibiza in 2014 and is now a franchise focused on clean eating for all diets, opening in Belfast in 2017. The Skinny Kitchen have an emphasis on sustainability and good ethics, serving fairtrade coffee and using local suppliers where possible.

I took the opportunity to treat myself to a veggie breakfast, this was a great healthier take on the traditional; with falafel, avocado, a large mushroom, beans, relish and lovely little roast cherry tomatoes. The menu says there should be extra mushroom if you’re going for the vegan option, to replace the egg that would have been there but there was a wee mix up in the kitchen. Never-the-less, it was a great breakfast, complemented by the rocket garnish and chunky relish, it was healthy & filling.

The boyfriend had the soup of the day,  which was sweet potato, beautifully presented with a scatter of pumpkin, sunflower and poppy seeds sprinkled on the top – smooth, simple soup with tasty crusty bread on the side.

The Skinny Kitchen was trendy and welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for them popping up elsewhere.
