Where: The Stove, 100 High Street, Dumfries, Scotland, DG1 2BJ
When: 22nd January 2018
I’d been looking forward to visiting The Stove, since local vegan baker ‘Beets and Treats’ started supplying them with cakes. I’m part of a friendly Dumfries based vegan group on Facebook, this is how I discovered Beets and Treats, and after she posted a picture of a Black Forest Cake, I knew I had to order that cake for my birthday – with my German heritage a handy excuse. I finally got to visit The Stove and had a slice of the victoria sponge cake. It was moist in all the right places, cream and jam sandwiched in the middle, perfect texture and flavour, creamy and sturdy. A great treat complemented by my cappucino with soya milk.
About The Stove: The Stove is a regional arts organisation based at their hub and studios in Dumfries town centre, from which they operate a rough and ready café with a relaxed atmosphere. They hold a diverse range of events there too, including events to raise money and awareness for MOOL – a local charity supporting refugees and promoting inclusion in the region.
The Black Forest Cake: I had been thinking about writing a post on this alone, though as it was before the inception of Greedy Herbivore I hadn’t taken photos that really did it justice; there is a lot of detail that went into this creation. It was covered in a subtle golden shimmer, delicious chocolate buttercream piped in swirls adorn the top with fresh cherries with their stalks still in tact. The cake itself was a delicious rich and moist combination of chocolate and cherry. Entirely handmade, this cake was simply incredible! Definitely recommended, cannot say enough good things about this cake, you can find Beets and Treats on Facebook here.
