Just off the Old Market Square in Nottingham and down a wee flight of stairs marked by a window of donuts, leads to donut wonderland, also known as Doughnotts. Doughnotts, formerly known as The Nottingham Doughnut Co, has a most excellent range of vegan donuts alongside their ‘normal’ donuts. There is a small dining in area and they’re well equipped to take away too. Staff are very mindful of allergies and dietary preferences, always asking when packing in order to pack the donuts appropriately.
They come up with new donuts regularly; at the time of my visit the vegan specimens included peanut butter & jam, ‘soil’ – topped with chocolate sugar strands, chocolate fondant icing and crumbled oreos, one topped with party rings and a just jam donut.
They’re a good size and three ‘standard’ donuts will set you back just £5. I love the way they’re a mix between traditional jam donuts and ring donuts, the jam sits in the middle on a thinner layer of donut. I had a hard time choosing, in the end opting for the peanut butter and jam, and two ‘soil’ donuts to take to a friends’ place.
I’ve heard they get very busy at lunchtimes, and I’m not surprised, but it’s definitely worth it to pop in and try some. They’re also expanding and opening new outlets in other towns in the north of England. I look forward to seeing future vegan concoctions.
