Where: Truffle Fairy, Kilkenny Farmer’s Market, The Parade, Collegepark, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, Ireland
The Truffle Fairy Café, Chapel Lane, Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland
I first discovered The Truffle Fairy at Kilkenny Farmer’s Market (on every Thursday 9:30am-2:30pm), just outside the Castle in this beautiful historic city, on a research trip for my current internship. I had been forewarned that they do amazingly delicious vegan friendly hot chocolate and hand-made chocolates too.
They have a number of different hot chocolate options, even at the Farmer’s Market, and a fantastic selection of vegan chocolates, all labelled with allergens and a ‘V’ for vegan. Rosemary Pear, Passionfruit Dark, Strawberry Crystal Gin Thyme and Raspberry Vodka to name a few. They also make fresh raw cacao slices, flapjacks and other treats with a good proportion being vegan friendly. On this occasion I had the raw cacao slice (€4), it was delicious, and rich and lovely.
The Truffle Fairy Cafe, is in the lovely, picturesque town of Thomastown, a quick 20 minute train ride or drive away from Kilkenny city. Here, they have all their hot chocolate options available, individual hand-made chocolates and chocolate bars to buy as well as other delights from local producers such as spelt bread and Eamonn’s organic juices.
The range of unique hot chocolate blends (€3.70), which are available with almond, coconut or soya milks are delicious. To date, I have tried the ‘Mexican’ and the ‘Aztec’ hot chocolate drinks; the smooth chocolate blends deliciously with rich spices such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and ginger retaining their distinct flavours. They are refreshing and lovely on a hot sunny day or great as something to warm you up on a more grey Irish day.

The Truffle Fairy’s allure arises not just from its delicious end products, but also their ethos and attention to detail; they are committed to using locally sourced and organic ingredients where available; even the beautiful, and very ergonomic, cups used in the café are made by a local ceramicist.
Next visit I’ll have to treat myself to some of the individual chocolates as they look divine. Watch this space for the review of those!
