When: 26th May 2018

Where: The Candied Hazelnut, 11 O’Connell St, Waterford, County Waterford, Ireland

The Candied Hazelnut is a relatively newly opened restaurant in Waterford, the menu is entirely plant-based, gluten-free and peanut-free. Although only opened in May The Candied Hazelnut have already been nominated for two awards in the YesChef Ireland Awards; Front of House and Newcomer of the Year and have been listed at the No. 2 spot in the ‘Top 10 Vegan Cafés in Ireland (outside Dublin)’ list on Irelandbeforeyoudie.com.

They offer breakfasts, brunches, lunches and evening meals, delicious coffees and teas with a range of plant milks, vegan friendly and gluten-free wines and beers and cakes. I wanted to go for mid-morning brunch but a cooking accident at home meant I ended up waiting at the emergency doctor for a few hours instead, so it ended up being a mid to late afternoon lunch instead.

The menu has a range of daily specials, including a soup of the day and pasta of the day. I went for the lasagne with salad (€7.95), the boyfriend went for the shepherdless pie with home-made chips (€9.95).

The vegan lasagne was delicious, so creamy and cheesy and full of fresh vegetables, and check out that beautiful salad on the side. The boyfriend really enjoyed his shepherdless pie, and even said that they were some of the best chips he’s ever had. It’s easy to see how The Candied Hazelnut has gained so much praise so quickly, not only does it make it easy for vegans and people with certain allergies to eat out, the food is tasty, hearty and wholesome, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed.

They are also part of the Conscious Cup Campaign, so if you use a reusable cup for your takeaway coffee, you can get a 10% discount.

I look forward to visiting again and trying more of their menu, hopefully I’ll get some brunch next time. Check out their menus and activities on their Facebook page.

Oh, and they also have a really beautiful mural on the front of the café, makes it easy not to miss!
