Truffles Restaurant, Kilkenny, Ireland

When: 14th July 2018

Where: Truffles Restaurant, 22 William Street, Kilkenny, County Kilkenny, R95 V120, Ireland

A mere few minutes’ walk from the historic Kilkenny Castle, the Truffle Restaurant is tucked down William Street off the main high street. As soon as we walked in to book a table, we were greeted by friendly staff and a warm atmosphere.

When we returned in the evening, the waiter had remembered that we had asked about vegan options, and showed us the vegan menu and told us about the day’s specials. These included a vegan soup, a main of vegan ‘fish’ and a vegan mango cheesecake.

To start we had the vegan antipasto platter (€10) to share, (not pictured) which included earthy houmous, olives and aubergine, nicely presented on a beet leaf.

For main course (€18.50) I wanted to try the ‘fish’; the waiter had recommended it to us and said he had tried it himself and was very impressed. This vegan fish was celeriac wrapped in seaweed, it came accompanied with a fresh salad and the chunkiest home-made chips, it was presented beautifully and tasted incredible. The celeriac was soft and melted in the mouth, combined with the seaweed it was tasty and the textures complemented each other well. He went for the wild mushroom and truffle risotto, which he enjoyed too.

For dessert I had the special vegan dessert of the day; mango cheesecake, topped with a dollop of crispy meringue, a physalis lay in one corner and flower petals and icing sugar adorned the plate. Again, the textures and taste were incredible, the cheesecake was creamy and rich but not overly-sweet, the meringue was light and crispy. The boyfriend went for chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream which he enjoyed.

The Truffles Restaurant is a bit pricier than our average outings, but it was a special occasion after all (the anniversary of our first date), however, the quality of the food, the atmosphere, the presentation and attention to detail and the staff made it all worth it.
