Last year I wrote an article about ‘Alternative Chocolate’, an independent, family run business based in Dumfries, Scotland. Just before Christmas 2018 ‘Alternative Chocolate’ announced a change. They have worked hard to rebrand and develop their recipes.
Alternative Chocolate impressed me for a few different reasons; their entrepreneurial spirit, developing something amazing out of what will have been a very frustrating time – discovering children in the family had multiple allergies; I also love how personable they are – Sarah deals with social media and enquiries and is all round lovely; and, of, course, the chocolate itself. So I was very excited when Sarah offered to send me samples of their new and improved chocolate selection.

So, what’s new? There are now 7 carefully crafted flavours; blonde, dark, dark mint, dark orange, mylk, mylk maple and mylk orange. All distinctive in flavours and textures.
Blonde is made simply with raw cacao butter, coconut bliss and coconut sugar, the latter is what gives it its distinct colour. It has a cool flavour with a lovely crunch and subtle butterscotch note.
Dark is rich and bitter, just as dark chocolate should be and retains that delicious texture that reminded me of Modica chocolate.
When I opened the wrapper of the Dark Mint there was an immediate burst of minty fresh fragrance, and the taste doesn’t disappoint; the cool peppermint contrasts brilliantly with the subtle bitter dark chocolate.

Dark Orange has a crunchy texture, whilst somehow simultaneously smooth and melts in the mouth, with strong orange flavour.
Mylk is sweet and milky with a smoother texture than the others and a bit of a nutty undertone, (but don’t worry, no nuts here!).
Mylk maple, is reminiscent of maple syrup and is silky smooth.
The Mylk Orange was probably the most unusual for me, I don’t think I’ve come across vegan milk orange chocolate, this was lovely, with a slight texture and delicious cool smooth milk with orange tones.
The improvements that Freedom have made are impressive, the quality of the chocolate is phenomenal; they use mostly certified organic ingredients, this combined with the traditional method of handtabling makes the chocolate really special. They are also dedicated to environmental principles, and their gorgeous new packaging is entirely plastic free.Freedom Chocolate are committed to making chocolate that is truly inclusive, for those with multiple allergies – dairy, nuts, soy – and vegans, a high quality treat for all to be free to enjoy. It’s a massive achievement and I will certainly be sending some to friends as gifts. A mini bar (30g) is only ÂŁ1.75 whilst a large bar is ÂŁ4.25 (90g). Available through their online shop and at various stockists around the UK – follow on Facebook to find out where.
