When: 2nd – 5th September 2019
Where: Blackpool, Lancashire, England
In September, we travelled to Blackpool for a mini break. We were attracted by the Pleasure Beach as my partner had never been to a proper theme park with big rollercoasters. It rained almost every day and was very windy one of the days, with gusts over 100kmh and our hotel was a friendly dive with no running hot water.

Regardless, we had a fun time and were pleasantly surprised at what we found food wise and the variety of cuisine in our quick 3 day stay.

We had a fab time enjoying the delights of Blackpool, including the Blackpool Tower with amazing views of the seafront and town, the Pleasure Beach and riding a vintage tram to see the Illuminations.

The Compass Café Bar
24 Birley Street, Blackpool, FY1 1DU

The Compass Café is a sweet little independent café situated in the town centre by the north pier. It was busy when we walked in which we took as a good sign and we weren’t disappointed. We both went for the vegan breakfast option, which had a nice range of items, including avocado, mushrooms, beans, friend tomato, sausage, hash browns and toast. For drinks they also provide a range of plant milks. I would highly recommend here for breakfast.

Prior to this trip to I had avoided Wetherspoon’ establishments for years, but the evening before we had ended up there for dinner at The Velvet Coaster at the other end of town and had enjoyed my food there. I’m afraid to say this breakfast offering was pretty disappointing, the mushrooms were greasy, and the sausages were chewy and presented poorly. I should point out that Wetherspoon’s recently added beans to their vegan breakfast offering.

We popped into the Big Pizza Kitchen to see if they could do anything for us. It was a buffet but they whipped up a vegan pizza – without cheese – just for us and delivered to our table. Despite the lack of yellow stuff it was quite a pleasant pizza, the toppings were generous and there was a nice mix of veg. There were a couple of pasta dishes and items from the salad bar that were vegan friendly and it was good value too.

Along with Creams (see below!), our visit to Bella Italia was one of my favourite food experiences in Blackpool. The reception and welcome when we asked for the vegan menu was so warm and down to earth, it made us immediately at ease. The lady who served us was chatty, personable and knowledgeable. I had the burger and he had the pasta, both far surpassed our expectations.

One evening, we were looking for dessert and not many places were open. We spotted Creams was open and it was cold, so despite the name and nothing being obvious from the outside that they had anything vegan we took our chances. I’m glad we did! They had an extensive and delicious vegan dessert menu, including crepes, waffles and cookie dough. This was my favourite little surprise of Blackpool.

We had vegan cookie dough with chocolate ice cream, apart from my mum who went for the healthy option – topped with strawberries instead. I went back on the last day to try out the vegan crepes, topped with fruit salad, delicious.

Viva Vegas Diner is a fun 50s style eatery, we spotted that they had vegan options on the menu; a vegan hot dog and a vegan burger. I have to admit that these tasted better than they looked, though I was bemused that I had to put the sausage in the bun myself. The interior was fun and quirky, and there was sports shown on televisions around the diner.

We needed to find somewhere warm before we went on our vintage tram ride, so we tried out The Velvet Coaster, part of the Wetherspoon’s chain. I had a warming jacket potato with five bean chilli. I was impressed at the service and and the option of a kombucha with the meal too.

The Wok Inn is a quirky, colourful, seaside restaurant at the north end of the town. They have a generous amount of vegan options, we popped in for lunch and both had the vegan katsu curry which was delicious.

We had a great time in Blackpool, despite the weather, and I know we didn’t scratch the surface of what’s available. Thanks for having us Blackpool!
