30th December 2022 – 6th January 2023
We had an amazing time in Panglao, stayed in fabulous accommodation with a private beach and restaurant, we had a road trip to the Chocolate Hills, relaxed, and saw the New Year in at Alona Beach. We ate at the same places a few times and had some great food. In Panglao itself, prices seemed a little higher than in other places we’d been to in the Philippines.
Bohol Beach Club Restaurant
Bo. Bolod Island of Panglao, 6340 Bohol, Philippines
We stayed at the beautiful Bohol Beach Club, complete with private beach, restaurant, swimming pool and many other facilities.
Breakfast

Breakfast was included with our booking, which was a huge buffet and there were different items to choose from. Options changed daily, toast and rice were available every morning. Other vegan options included pancit with vegetables, toast, hash browns, potato wedges, turon and banana cue. Most mornings soya milk was available on request for our coffee too. It was really a great spread.
Dinner

We were delighted to discover that the restaurant also had a vegan section for dinner, some items subject to availability. Throughout our stay here, we tried the pizza, spaghetti with vegan balls, vegan nuggets, vegan tapa, and vegan sausages with fries. Prices range from 320 – 575 PHP. Small portions but tasty. My favourites were the pizza and and the spaghetti. As the beach club is a bit away from the main towns, it was great to know these options were available on our doorstep.
Shaka
Panglao Island Circumferential Rd, Panglao, Bohol, Philippines

Shaka is a small chain of vegetarian and vegan friendly cafes, with branches dotted across the Philippines, including Manila, Moalboal, Siargao and Cebu. This one was in a handy spot for the lively Alona Beach in Panglao. I had the Kasbah wrap, which was stuffed with falafel, houmous and salad. It was delicious. The menu was very extensive, including burgers, desserts and breakfast items. Delicious coffee too, available with a variety of plant milks.
Luna Rossa Vegetarian Italian
Hontanosas Rd. Alona Drive, Tawala, Panglao 6340 Philippines

Another gem, a very short walk from Alona Beach, this was one of my favourites in Panglao. Luna Rossa is a vegetarian restaurant, with many vegan options, clearly marked on their English menu. It was so good, we went back twice. They serve Italian cuisine with some Filipino touches sprinkled throughout the menu, with Italian wine available too. They also served fresh, complementary bread before each dinner.
The first night we went, we both had the spaghetti with soy meat, with nutritional yeast as parmesan. The following evening, he had the veggie nuggets made from seitan, and I had the chickpeas burger. Drinks included various coffees with soya milk available, and shakes, I tried the banana soy milk shake which was very creamy and tasty.

Delicious bread served before the main course.
I couldn’t resist ordering the vegan coconut and mango panna cotta. As with all the rest of the dishes, it was presented beautifully, the delicacy of the flavours and skill of design blew me away. Incredible experience in this friendly little restaurant. A must visit if you’re in the area.

Paddy’s Irish Beer Pub
Rue de Premier Tawala, Panglao 6340 Philippines – Cali and gulay lumpia

Oliver is a bit of a footie fan, so he was looking for somewhere to watch his match on New Year’s Eve and we came across Paddy’s Irish Beer Pub. Run by Paddy from Dublin (we’re from Dublin, so that was a fun coincidence), and his lovely Filipina wife, we had the most warmest of welcomes. I’m not a big drinker and was delighted to discover Cali – a sparkling pineapple drink. We also had some delicious lumpiang gulay – vegetable spring rolls – too.
Really fun vibe, and a great spot.
Restaurant at Chocolate Hills
Chocolate Hills Complex, Unnamed Road, Carmen, Bohol, Philippines

One of our favourite days, we went on a road trip to Bohol, taking in the Tarsier Sanctuary and the Chocolate Hills. We had spot of lunch at the restaurant at the top of the Chocolate Hills Complex, which had lovely views. The prices were very reasonable, and we had vegetable chow mein and rice.
Banana Cue at Corella
E Calio St, Corella, Bohol, Philippines

We passed by the little town of Corella and there happened to be a tennis event on so there were a few stalls. We stopped off and discovered the very best banana cue. Not sure how regular this lady is there, but well worth a look if passing through. It was located on the main road by the Corella Town Plaza.
Tagbilaran Market and Supermarket at City Island Mall
Rajah Sikatuna Ave, Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines

We stopped off at Tagbilaran town and had a look round the market, which had lots of lovely fresh vegetables amongst other food items.
However, we were looking for snacks for our day trip the following morning with an early start, so we hopped over to the Island Mall to have a look at the supermarket. They had quite a number of items – including Pili nuts, vegetable crisps, adobo cracker nuts, dark chocolate with hazelnuts, hopia monggo (pastry with bean paste) and lots of other nuts.
They also had a good selection of plant milks, including chocolate milk, mixed in with the general milk section.

We definitely ate well here in Panglao and Bohol, found some great options and a beautiful place to stay.
