Vegan in Manila (Part 2) – Greenhills Shopping Centre, San Juan January 2023

6th – 12th January 2023

Our final stop on our trip was Manila, the bustling capital of the Philippines. It was an emotional week, the end of our incredible trip, and we ate at some great places! I had so much to put in one post about eating in Manila, it was difficult to know where to start so I’ve split it into two posts. The first being more scattered around Manila (click here for that) and this second part all about Greenhills Shopping Centre in San Juan.

Greenhills Shopping Centre

Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan, 1500 Metro Manila

My favourites shops were grouped together on the third floor with collectibles, gaming and all sorts of nerdy memorabilia.

Greenhills is a treasure trove of shops of all kinds and we found a few good eating options here. Everything you can think of is here, electronics, clothes, locally made crafts, food stalls and even gaming & collectible stores.

Break Vegan Fast Food

Unit S1011 Shoppesville, Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan, 1500 Metro Manila

The pictures don’t do this food justice! L-R Ch*ken burger, home-made fried ch*cken and vegan fried egg, rice & tapa

Break is a vegan takeaway and small eatery, specialising in veganised Filipino dishes and fried chicken. We actually ordered ours via the Grab App and had it delivered straight to our accommodation – Fame Residences. The photos aren’t the best, we’d had a long day, and were a bit tired that evening, but it was great to try these and my only regret is that we didn’t try more dishes from Break when we went to Greenhills.

I had the tapa (traditionally this is cured beef, pork or various other meats) with vegan fried egg and garlic rice (220 PHP), we also had the tofu-based vegan ch*cken (various prices depending on how many pieces) and Ollie had the vegan ch*cken burger (230 PHP). It was good to have a variety of dishes, especially the home-made ch*cken. The fried egg was a little unusual – it was my first vegan fried egg, the yolk was made of truffle – it was fun and has inspired me to try and make my own too! You have to try the fried ch*cken here, delicious.

Soy Bueno

Service Rd, San Juan, Metro Manila

When we got to Greenhills, immediately we delightedly spied Soy Bueno, a vegan friendly taho place, with mostly vegan options and an extensive menu of soy milk teas. Taho is a traditional Filipino snack food that happens to be vegan. The main ingredients are silken tofu, arnibal (brown sugar syrup) and sago pearls, usually sold on the streets by taho vendors.

This was my first taste of taho, and I absolutely loved it! Huge portions too, I went for the classic which was just 80 PHP. So many other options at this place, it’s brilliant, and I love the cute logo too! They also sell tofu to take away too.

Coco Ichibanya

Ortigas Ave Connecticut 1503, Connecticut, San Juan, Metro Manila

Coco Ichibanya is an international chain of Japanese curry houses. First opened in Japan in 1978, opening various restaurants in Japan, Hawaii, around south east Asia and eventually opening in Manila in 2015. They had various vegetable curry options including eggplant, spinach, mixed vegetable and okra tofu. I had the okra tofu and he went for the mixed vegetable. Both were nice and it was something different for us.

N. B. It is my understanding that the allergen list for these curries may say they may contain milk, due to potential cross contamination only. I did reach out to Coco Ichibanya for confirmation but I haven’t heard back as of yet.

Cof

3rd Level, San Juan, 1502, Metro Manila

Cof is a cute little coffee shop on the top floor of Greenhills Shopping Centre, next to all the brilliant nerdy shops. They had soya milk for coffees, I had a great iced coffee whilst sat in the ambience of a lovely shop full of comic, sci-fi and other memorabilia.

If visiting Greenhills as a vegan there are lots of options to keep you fuelled up whilst you shop (it’s a great place for gifts!). It’s a treasure and my highly recommended favourites are Soy Bueno and Break Vegan Fast Food.
