16th – 17th March

We didn’t eat much in Hiroshima, as we only had around 24 hours here. We had planned to visit the Vegan Fruits Café Tamaru, but unfortunately it happened to be closed the day we were there. We had also planned to try out the vegan Hiroshima style okonomiyaki in the well-reviewed Jirokichi, but it was booked up.
Negian Nagarekawa
Japan, 〒730-0029 Hiroshima, Naka Ward, Mikawacho, 9−22 第2KTビル 2F

Fortunately, a short walk from Jirokichi, we found Negian Nagarekawa. Up on the second floor, we had a friendly welcome and were told they could do okonomiyaki with no egg and no meat. They have an English menu, and one staff member who specially helped us, as our Japanese was poor!

Okonomiyaki is traditionally, a ‘pancake’ made cabbage, tempura scraps, flour, also eggs and pork belly, topped with a variety of toppings of one’s choice. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki differs as the ingredients are layered, rather than mixed. Here at Negian Nagarekawa we tried the Basic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki (730) and specified no egg. It was topped with delicious sauce, green onion and sesame seed. I also ordered tofu steak on the side. All was very delicious and very welcome paired with a refreshing Asahi after a lot of walking around in the day!
7-Eleven
6-11 Hondori, Naka Ward, Hiroshima, 730-0035, Japan

This 7-Eleven outlet at the end ofHondori – a huge colourful covered street – is where I first found ‘Karinto Sweet Bun’, which I got rather addicted to. On the outside, they are crispy, deep fried, brown sugar-y and adzuki bean paste in the middle, yum! I used a translation app to check the ingredients were all vegan friendly.
