Where: Token, 72-74 Queen Street, Smithfield, Dublin 7

When: 31st December 2017

I’d been looking forward to visiting Token – a retro arcade, restaurant, bar and event space opened May 2017 near the centre of Dublin. I’m a geek at heart and I always love a chance to beat my lovely boyfriend at Mariokart, so off we trotted to find Token on a wet and dready New Year’s Eve.

Token describes its grub as ‘gourmet fast food’ and the menu is fun with novelty names for dishes, with a selection of carnivore,  omnivore and vegan dishes. I chose the vegan ‘Nah Dogg with vegan chilli’, we shared some herb fries while the boyfriend had a plain vegan ‘Nah Dogg’. The food was nice if a little pricey; the plain hot dog was €7.95, with vegan chilli it’s €9.95. I think the price really reflects being in the environment and the experience of being in the retro arcade, which was fun, of course.

To make use of the arcade machines tokens are 1 for .50 cents, 10 tokens for €5 euros, 22 tokens for €10. Most of the arcade games seemed to take 2 tokens for one game and include classics such as street fighter, Mortal Kombat,  Donkey Kong, Double Dragon,  Spiderman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I failed at Dance Dance Revolution, but won at Mariokart, which is really, all that matters. All in all a fun treat and I’d love to pop back to try their vegan dessert.
